“The Girl Who Waited”

first off, if you're wondering, no, Keith has not regenerated. I'm just filling in for a week while he's off fighting crime, or perhaps committing crime, or whatever he's up to. If you're following the Doctor Who Classic writeups where I normally hang out, we're pushing coverage of "The Aztecs" back a week to Sept. 18 to accommodate this shift. It's 47 years old; it'll wait for "The Girl Who Waited."
The best thing about traveling with the Doctor is that he's pretty much making it all up as he goes along. He always has been, in all his incarnations, ever since he stole the TARDIS in the first place. He bounces around time and space essentially at random, usually with no more solid plan in mind than seeing what fantastic new horizon appears each time he lands. Those guys on Star Trek are always talking about diplomatic missions and border patrols to explain why they're traveling around, but on Doctor Who, you don't need a reason, you just go. It's the pure spirit of adventure, pure curiosity, that motivates him, and what's more fun than that? That's shown to great effect here by the opening scene of "The Girl Who Waited," in which a typically ebullient Eleventh Doctor talks up the wonders of (but sadly for me, not the spelling of) Apulapuchia, or perhaps Appleapplechia, or perhaps Apoo-lapoo-chia, the second-greatest vacation planet in the known universe.
The worst thing about traveling with the Doctor is that he's pretty much making it all up as he goes along. And pretty often, things go wrong. In fact, as much as he might talk about vacation planets, something terrible happens every single time we've ever seen him land somewhere. That's shown to great effect here by the rest of "The Girl Who Waited," in which it turns out that Apeuailabbajia, or whatever the hell it is, is not the vacation paradise described on the brochures, but a planet-sized plague hospital under strict and harshly enforced quarantine—a detail which the Doctor overlooked because he apparently never bothered to do any simple research before landing. Toward the middle of this episode, the usually passive Rory loses his cool and becomes one of the few characters in the history of the series to really call the Doctor out on the consequences of his happy-go-lucky approach to traveling. And he's earned the rebuke; at one point, my wife turned to me and asked "When do you think Rory's going to punch the Doctor out?"
That's always been an undercurrent on Doctor Who, but the Steven Moffat era has taken pains to highlight just how disruptive the madman with a box can be on the lives of the people around him, even those he calls friends. River Song is disruptive too, but that's nothing compared to the Doctor, who has left a trail of massively changed lives behind him for hundreds of years—not always for the better, nor with the greatest of intentions or foresight motivating him. Amy pays the price for this in "The Girl Who Waited," but of course that's not a new thing for her—the episode title is a callback to her first appearance back in "The Eleventh Hour," and her first unintentional betrayal by the Doctor when he showed up 12 years late to meet her. And Amy's deep-set abandonment issues come up again here when she's trapped for 36 years in the hospital, slowly turning bitter and angry at both of the men who, from her perspective anyway, have left her behind.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Easy enough to do that with this show. First, there's the episode's memorable early scene setting up Amy's accidental abandonment, a sequence peppered by zingy dialogue like "Your mobile telephone? I bring you to a paradise planet two billion miles from Earth, and you want to update Twitter?" Instead of the soaring silver colonnades the Doctor promised, there's just a door. The Doctor and Rory push a green button on the door to enter a room, followed moments later by Amy, who pushes a red button at the same door, enters the same room, but not the same room the others are in. They soon realize that they can see each other's alternate realities though a large round magnifying-glass that I think might have been nicked from the set of Fringe. It's an enticing puzzle of the kind that Moffat's series has been particularly keen on throwing at us, but I found myself enjoying the cleverness of the explanation without really buying into it. Maybe because I'm pretty sure it's not really clever, just glib. The way this time-shift works, I think, is that the victims of the one-day plague come here to die in rooms where time has been sped way up so that their relatives can watch them live all the decades that they were supposed to if they hadn't caught the plague that's supposed to kill you in one day. But if time is sped up for the sick people, wouldn't the people watching see them seem to die in mere seconds? How do they get to live for decades? And how did a week go by for Amy trapped in that room, but she survived without food or water? We do get an answer, but it's some mumbled bafflegab about time compression, which zooms by so quickly that Matt Smith might as well have explained it by saying "well, it works like this—wow, look behind you, there's a neon giraffe!—and that's how it works. Oh, look, another shiny thing..."

Kalamkari, as practised in this town, is an elaborate, laborious and slow process involving several stages — resist-dyeing, sketching and hand painting. Much of this time is taken up by the treatment required on the fabric before and after the painting is completed. The staple colours are red, black, blue and shades of brown including ochre, yellow and mustard. Only thick-woven cloth is used as only this can withstand repeated washing, often in boiling water, that the making entails.

Pochampally and Mangalgiri, the famous weaves of Andhra Pradesh, and raw silk are the popular base materials. Nowadays, Mysore crepe silk, Kanchipuram, Peddapuram and Dharmavaram silks are also used, explains senior artist S Narasimhulu.

Kalamkari has another school where art by the same name is made, but using a different process — block printing. It is used in Machilipatnam (aka Bandar) in western Andhra Pradesh. These products are comparatively cheaper.

Kalamkari products were originally created for temples as narrative murals. They narrated stories from epics — the wedding of Rama-Sita and Shiva-Parvati, and Krishna’s exploits were (and still are) popular themes. Being a port, Machilipatnam’s work was heavily influenced and this art acquired more general and nature-inspired motifs under Dutch and later, British rule. Another difference, which is blurring now, at Machilipatnam are the motifs used in the art such as trees, creepers, flowers and animals as well as birds like peacocks and parrots.

Although his journey of self-knowledge, Dubose-Gibson was diagnosed with alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes permanent hair loss.

"I do not feel good about myself and saw that it was really a roadblock," she said of the emotions associated with losing her hair.

A Love Story

So Lucas asked Powell's roommate what the deal was.

"She said, 'I'll go let her know, again.' And when she came back that time she told me that I had promised to be there at 8, and it was about five minutes after 8 when I got there, so she had changed her mind and had decided to do something else," Lucas said.

Perhaps down, but Lucas was not out, because this is the same guy who not too long before that had seen Powell, a new teacher at the school where he'd been teaching, and for whatever reason was absolutely mesmerized.

"I began staring at her and staring at her," Lucas said.

A fellow teacher asked Lucas why he kept gazing at the woman.

Lucas remembered saying, "I believe I see my wife."

Love bears all things.

Blondola Powell became Blondola Powell Lucas on August 12, 1945 at a ceremony in Charlotte, Blondola's hometown.

But Uncle Sam needed John Lucas in the Asiatic-Pacific theater for World War II. The young man went across the water, did his part to help handle America's business and returned to his bride in Kinston, where he resumed his teaching career and became an assistant principal.

John Lucas, from Rocky Mount, accepted a principalship at a school in Oxford. Blondola began to teach school in Oxford.

And then Hillside High School called on John Lucas to be principal, and that's how the Lucases got to Durham, where Blondola Lucas served as assistant principal at Shepard Middle School.

Love endures all things.

"We've been quite a team," John Lucas said. "Of course, you have differences of opinions to discuss. But you resolve them."

Ah, so that's why the Lucases have been married so long.

Today is their 66th wedding anniversary.

Yet today married couples will call it quits after just six years. Some couples might not last six months.

"I guess it's dedication to purpose and belief that all things are possible if you have a strong faith and belief. A faith that will not shrink," John Lucas said. "Belief in God creates unity of purpose and goals and togetherness.

"We not only lived together, we worked together. We were in church together," John Lucas said.

Wait a minute -- John and Blondola Lucas are best friends?

"Oh, yes!" said John Lucas, 91.

Love does not insist on its own way.

Blondola Lucas, 90, doesn't say much these days. But she pushed through the limitations Father Time has put on her and mustered the strength to let it be known John Lucas still is her big man.

"You have to accept your challenges and your opportunities," explained John Lucas, who said he's given up many of the things he wants to do in order to spend the days with his wife at Hillcrest Convalescent Center, where Duke University basketball players including Nolan Smith have dropped by to visit.

John Lucas said Smith, drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers, played basketball with his grandson, John Lucas III, a member of the NBA's Chicago Bulls and son of former NBA player and coach John Lucas Jr., one of the great athletes to come out of Hillside.

John Sr. and Blondola Lucas have a daughter, Cheryl, who was an educator in Washington, D.C. The elder Lucases have a total of three grandchildren by John  Lucas Jr. and his wife, DeEdgra.

A new Durham middle school is being named to honor John Lucas Sr., former president of Shaw University in Raleigh. Back in June during a reunion of Durham high schools, John Lucas Sr. was dubbed Father of the Decade.

Quite frankly, the recounting of all of John Lucas Sr.'s accolades could go on for quite some time. The man's been walking around on this terra firma more than nine decades.

Yet the old educator would tell you none of those accomplishments mean as much as the achievement of having stayed married to the same woman for 66 years.

"Oh, no!" John Lucas Sr. insisted. "Marriage is No. 1."

John Lucas Sr. said he couldn't recall a time when the sun went down and he and his wife were mad at each other.

In fact, John Lucas Sr. can't remember a day when the two didn't put forth the effort to maintain communication. Even when he was away at war, he said daily he'd write her a letter or little note, and she was back in Kinston putting words on paper for him.

"You work at it by being together, and sharing, caring. Sharing each others' accomplishments and sharing each others' sorrows, and aches and pains," John Lucas Sr. said. "I'm not certain that there has been a day that we haven't either been together, talked by telephone or wrote each other."

And that was before cell phones and email and Facebook and Skype.

"Frequent and steady contact with each other, which allows love to grow," John Lucas Sr. said.

Of course, the younger generation manages frequent and steady communication with friends. The contact just doesn't always carry over to spouses, according to America's divorce rate.

Like he does every evening, John Lucas Sr. will sit with his wife until she falls asleep at the rest home. Then he'll he go home to rest over there on Washington Street where he once lived with his bride.

Blondola Powell Lucas said she loves her husband now as much as she ever did. John Lucas Sr. said the feeling is mutual, and then some.

"It's more and more each day," John Lucas Sr. said. "Love is eternal and is in evolution. There's no end to it."

Love never fails. 

'Gossip Girl To CW

Hate those two-month breaks the CW has in the middle of every season? Well, fortunately the network has done something about them.
Turns out that four of our favorite CW shows have received extra episodes this coming season to make the wait a little shorter (and less painful). Deadline has learned that "Gossip Girl" is each getting extra episodes this season, while "Nikita" and "Supernatural" each get one. The intent is to bring the rerun periods in the middle of the seasons -- typically from the end of November to the beginning of January -- to a minimum as much as possible.
Yes, we also noticed "The Vampire Diaries" is missing from that list, but Deadline has a good explanation.
"TVD" has definitely grown in scale since its debut in 2009, and the show requires a much longer production time than the other shows that have received extra episodes. It's maintaining its 22 episode order because showrunner Kevin Williamson wouldn't be able to accommodate the extra episodes (not, be still our supernatural-obsessed hearts, because it's not popular enough).
It's also important to note Kevin has another big show on the horizon: "The Secret Circle." Two big TV series in one year obviously is a bit of a commitment, so we'll forgive the normal episode order this time. The three series that will be running in the midseason, when the main CW shows are on hiatus, are the final season of "One Tree Hill" and the reality series "Re-Modeled" and "The Frame."

NON-Color Fight with iPad Point in Subscriptions

IPAD made a few headlines this year with the anxiety over its app subscription model. Consumers were more than a little displeased to find out that their favorite magazines were costing upwards of $250 a year, the same as the newsstand price, to read them on their iPads. At the same time, big-name retailers had a battle of sorts with the tablet giant over the ability to send customers to their purchasing portals. But that’s not the real news behind why certain magazines are outselling iPad editions on the NON-Color. It comes down to simple marketing.
“The Nook Color has surprised publishers of women’s magazines like O, The Oprah Magazine, Cosmopolitan and Women’s Health by igniting strong sales that rival — and in some cases surpass — sales on the iPad,” says Jeremy W. Peters in an article in the New York Times.
While the iPad has been marketed as a combination do-it-all machine and grown man’s toy, if you will, Barnes and Noble took the quiet road with its target audience, literally. Commercials for the device, which has been on the market for less than a year, show women lounging on beaches or reclining for a few stolen quiet moments overlooking the backyard where their children play. The last thing Nook’s key demographic wants is an expensive device that lets you multi-task on fifteen different mini-screens at once.
And that price may have played a huge part in the higher sales to women. For a consumer group that has a notorious stereotypical reputation for not spending money on itself, the Nook Color was at a far-less guilt-inducing price point than the iPad, while still affording women the convenience of portable subscription-based reading and downloadable apps.
While Barnes and Noble will not reveal specific sales numbers for the Nook other than to say it is in the strong millions, several magazine publishers have now come forward with the information about how their sales are faring on the Nook Color versus the iPad. Publishing mainstay Rodale, which publishes Runners’ World, Women’s Health, and Prevention, just to name a few, now reports that it sells five times as many subscriptions on the Nook Color as it does on the iPad.

Rescue for woman who fell in Worcestershire well

A woman who fell 30ft (9m) into a well in Worcestershire and clung to a rope for 90 minutes until she was rescued has spoken of her ordeal.

Denise Brooks, 65, who cannot swim, was trying to free a water pump at the 400-year-old well when she slipped.
Mrs Brooks, from Abbots Morton, said she was up to her neck in water and could not touch the bottom of the well.
She was eventually winched up by fire crews. Paramedics said she appeared to be none the worse for the experience.
Mrs Brooks and her husband Mike had been pumping water from the well to a duck pond when the pump became stuck under the water.
Mr Brooks said in the past when that had happened the couple had lowered a ladder down the well and Mrs Brooks would climb down and prod the pump with a pole.

"The well has been here for around 400 years so we aren't exactly sure what is under the water," he said.

Unfortunately, Mrs Brooks slipped as she climbed down the ladder, which is not long enough to reach the water.
She said it was very frightening.
"I can't swim but managed to grab on to the rope to keep myself afloat.
"After a few minutes I managed to calm myself down and wedged myself against the wall and felt comfortable, but it was really cold."
She added that she was glad the rope was there, otherwise she did not know what might have happened.
"I cannot tell you how pleased I was to see a firefighter being lowered down the well coming to rescue me."
The couple said they keep a metal grid on top of the well to make sure no-one falls in.
Midlands Air Ambulance and specialist search-and-rescue teams were sent to help shortly before 16:00 BST on Monday.
