“The Girl Who Waited”

first off, if you're wondering, no, Keith has not regenerated. I'm just filling in for a week while he's off fighting crime, or perhaps committing crime, or whatever he's up to. If you're following the Doctor Who Classic writeups where I normally hang out, we're pushing coverage of "The Aztecs" back a week to Sept. 18 to accommodate this shift. It's 47 years old; it'll wait for "The Girl Who Waited."
The best thing about traveling with the Doctor is that he's pretty much making it all up as he goes along. He always has been, in all his incarnations, ever since he stole the TARDIS in the first place. He bounces around time and space essentially at random, usually with no more solid plan in mind than seeing what fantastic new horizon appears each time he lands. Those guys on Star Trek are always talking about diplomatic missions and border patrols to explain why they're traveling around, but on Doctor Who, you don't need a reason, you just go. It's the pure spirit of adventure, pure curiosity, that motivates him, and what's more fun than that? That's shown to great effect here by the opening scene of "The Girl Who Waited," in which a typically ebullient Eleventh Doctor talks up the wonders of (but sadly for me, not the spelling of) Apulapuchia, or perhaps Appleapplechia, or perhaps Apoo-lapoo-chia, the second-greatest vacation planet in the known universe.
The worst thing about traveling with the Doctor is that he's pretty much making it all up as he goes along. And pretty often, things go wrong. In fact, as much as he might talk about vacation planets, something terrible happens every single time we've ever seen him land somewhere. That's shown to great effect here by the rest of "The Girl Who Waited," in which it turns out that Apeuailabbajia, or whatever the hell it is, is not the vacation paradise described on the brochures, but a planet-sized plague hospital under strict and harshly enforced quarantine—a detail which the Doctor overlooked because he apparently never bothered to do any simple research before landing. Toward the middle of this episode, the usually passive Rory loses his cool and becomes one of the few characters in the history of the series to really call the Doctor out on the consequences of his happy-go-lucky approach to traveling. And he's earned the rebuke; at one point, my wife turned to me and asked "When do you think Rory's going to punch the Doctor out?"
That's always been an undercurrent on Doctor Who, but the Steven Moffat era has taken pains to highlight just how disruptive the madman with a box can be on the lives of the people around him, even those he calls friends. River Song is disruptive too, but that's nothing compared to the Doctor, who has left a trail of massively changed lives behind him for hundreds of years—not always for the better, nor with the greatest of intentions or foresight motivating him. Amy pays the price for this in "The Girl Who Waited," but of course that's not a new thing for her—the episode title is a callback to her first appearance back in "The Eleventh Hour," and her first unintentional betrayal by the Doctor when he showed up 12 years late to meet her. And Amy's deep-set abandonment issues come up again here when she's trapped for 36 years in the hospital, slowly turning bitter and angry at both of the men who, from her perspective anyway, have left her behind.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Easy enough to do that with this show. First, there's the episode's memorable early scene setting up Amy's accidental abandonment, a sequence peppered by zingy dialogue like "Your mobile telephone? I bring you to a paradise planet two billion miles from Earth, and you want to update Twitter?" Instead of the soaring silver colonnades the Doctor promised, there's just a door. The Doctor and Rory push a green button on the door to enter a room, followed moments later by Amy, who pushes a red button at the same door, enters the same room, but not the same room the others are in. They soon realize that they can see each other's alternate realities though a large round magnifying-glass that I think might have been nicked from the set of Fringe. It's an enticing puzzle of the kind that Moffat's series has been particularly keen on throwing at us, but I found myself enjoying the cleverness of the explanation without really buying into it. Maybe because I'm pretty sure it's not really clever, just glib. The way this time-shift works, I think, is that the victims of the one-day plague come here to die in rooms where time has been sped way up so that their relatives can watch them live all the decades that they were supposed to if they hadn't caught the plague that's supposed to kill you in one day. But if time is sped up for the sick people, wouldn't the people watching see them seem to die in mere seconds? How do they get to live for decades? And how did a week go by for Amy trapped in that room, but she survived without food or water? We do get an answer, but it's some mumbled bafflegab about time compression, which zooms by so quickly that Matt Smith might as well have explained it by saying "well, it works like this—wow, look behind you, there's a neon giraffe!—and that's how it works. Oh, look, another shiny thing..."

Pink Is The Color Of Hope, Faith And Strength

Women's basketball, often knocked and mocked, keep up the good work. Forget for a moment, rah-rah all about how far things have come, baby. The best game was the Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday night. And the WNBA Arenas last week. And the university settlements around the country every year in February.

Women's Basketball, more than any other sport, has become something pink is a deeper significance than the color of the famous panther. Pink became the international symbol of hope, faith and enlightenment for the families affected by breast cancer.

There were several survivors, wearing pink, half-court before the sun beat Chicago. The sun wore pink uniforms. Many fans in the building wore pink, too. It's all part of the week of the WNBA Breast Health Awareness.

Awareness, in this case, this means that when women look pink, they remember seeing a doctor. For the rest of us: You see the rose and make sure that women in your life seen a doctor. And you remember those who have overcome breast cancer. And you honor those who do not.

Just ask Asjha Jones, Grande Dame, Connecticut Sun
A family friend is in terms of Asjha Jones, "near the end" because of breast cancer.

"They all said goodbye," said Asjha some members of the family.

Grand-Jones died of it when she was little. She has a cousin in Chicago to fight for him. She said "important to my father the rest are dead."

And, as Jones ran up and down the court Tuesday night, running all the memories with him.

"I mean that I am old, but only in basketball," Jones, 31, said. "But I still checked every year. People need to do a better job of taking care of themselves. It is not easy now people are losing jobs and health insurance costs. But you just take it soon. Be diligent about . It 'important. Your life.

"When I was young, I, like many others, believes that it was not going to happen to me," he said. "Look at the women there (before the game). You can survive. This is not a death sentence."

You should all know by now not to discuss Asjha. Just saying.

The entire crowd rose Tuesday across the country and in other locations should make us think more of breast cancer. We should all listen to the words and get ourselves settled Asjha cancer, regardless of any plumbing, we happen to be. Rose also should give us pause to remember our family and friends, which led the battle, do not ask.

Cancer has touched me more this year than any other. A close friend of the family has learned this year, he had cancer. And for some long, day, loooooong in February, expect to see the stage, location, prognosis.

This was before the game of basketball in Georgetown-UConn Men in February I received a call in the hallway of the press. Good news: The cancer is not life threatening. But even cancer. I have not passed the "non-life threatening" part before I had to apologize for the arena and cry tears of joy, like Dick Vermeil. Funny how we wrap ourselves in this endeavor in the outcome of sporting events, until the reality hits us like the flu.

Fortunately, our friend is doing well. We did not know it was 10 years ago and now we can not imagine what the day would be like without him. And 'in my thoughts every time I see pink. As Ruthann Lobo, Rebecca his late mother, who died of breast cancer last month. That's why I used a pink shirt and black tie on Tuesday. He wore pink pants, too, but are not available in size 700

One day soon, to go out and buy a pink shirt. Wear it with pride. And on the way home, stop by the doctor. Think Pink and be good. And do not forget to thank the women's basketball to use his forum in the noblest way possible.

'Gossip Girl To CW

Hate those two-month breaks the CW has in the middle of every season? Well, fortunately the network has done something about them.
Turns out that four of our favorite CW shows have received extra episodes this coming season to make the wait a little shorter (and less painful). Deadline has learned that "Gossip Girl" is each getting extra episodes this season, while "Nikita" and "Supernatural" each get one. The intent is to bring the rerun periods in the middle of the seasons -- typically from the end of November to the beginning of January -- to a minimum as much as possible.
Yes, we also noticed "The Vampire Diaries" is missing from that list, but Deadline has a good explanation.
"TVD" has definitely grown in scale since its debut in 2009, and the show requires a much longer production time than the other shows that have received extra episodes. It's maintaining its 22 episode order because showrunner Kevin Williamson wouldn't be able to accommodate the extra episodes (not, be still our supernatural-obsessed hearts, because it's not popular enough).
It's also important to note Kevin has another big show on the horizon: "The Secret Circle." Two big TV series in one year obviously is a bit of a commitment, so we'll forgive the normal episode order this time. The three series that will be running in the midseason, when the main CW shows are on hiatus, are the final season of "One Tree Hill" and the reality series "Re-Modeled" and "The Frame."

NON-Color Fight with iPad Point in Subscriptions

IPAD made a few headlines this year with the anxiety over its app subscription model. Consumers were more than a little displeased to find out that their favorite magazines were costing upwards of $250 a year, the same as the newsstand price, to read them on their iPads. At the same time, big-name retailers had a battle of sorts with the tablet giant over the ability to send customers to their purchasing portals. But that’s not the real news behind why certain magazines are outselling iPad editions on the NON-Color. It comes down to simple marketing.
“The Nook Color has surprised publishers of women’s magazines like O, The Oprah Magazine, Cosmopolitan and Women’s Health by igniting strong sales that rival — and in some cases surpass — sales on the iPad,” says Jeremy W. Peters in an article in the New York Times.
While the iPad has been marketed as a combination do-it-all machine and grown man’s toy, if you will, Barnes and Noble took the quiet road with its target audience, literally. Commercials for the device, which has been on the market for less than a year, show women lounging on beaches or reclining for a few stolen quiet moments overlooking the backyard where their children play. The last thing Nook’s key demographic wants is an expensive device that lets you multi-task on fifteen different mini-screens at once.
And that price may have played a huge part in the higher sales to women. For a consumer group that has a notorious stereotypical reputation for not spending money on itself, the Nook Color was at a far-less guilt-inducing price point than the iPad, while still affording women the convenience of portable subscription-based reading and downloadable apps.
While Barnes and Noble will not reveal specific sales numbers for the Nook other than to say it is in the strong millions, several magazine publishers have now come forward with the information about how their sales are faring on the Nook Color versus the iPad. Publishing mainstay Rodale, which publishes Runners’ World, Women’s Health, and Prevention, just to name a few, now reports that it sells five times as many subscriptions on the Nook Color as it does on the iPad.

Pink is the new black when it comes to prestige color cosmetics

So far this year, women in the US are looking for bold and bright eye and nail colors and soft lip shades when buying cosmetics, and this in turn is helping prestige beauty sales soar this summer.

According to beauty market research conducted by The NPD Group, sales for prestige make up for January through May 2011, increased by nine percent to $1.4 billion in US department stores.
According to the research, for the month of May alone, make up posted its strongest dollar performance in the last three years.
Color cosmetics driving make up growth
The trends in dramatic eyes, soft lip shades, and bold and bright nail colors all contributed to the growth, and Karen Grant vice president and senior global industry analyst, commented on how the color pink has made resurgence.
"As consumers continue to gradually emerge from the great recession, the current sentiment among women seems to be 'celebrate your girlhood.' Pink, pink, and more pink, continues to lead the way in both lip and nail color.”
Grant added that the popularity of lip color, a category that had struggled for most of the past decade, suggests that even younger consumers are now seeing these products as a fashionable.
"Prestige make up sales are soaring this summer due to the strength of offerings that are easy to adopt and enticing with fashion, fun, as well as functionality," continued Grant.
Nails, eyes, lips…
The biggest growth in the prestige makeup category came from the smallest segment, the nail category. This consists of base coats/top coats, color enamel, and nail care, and grew 57 percent in dollar sales vs. January through May 2010.
The eye segment gained nearly 10 percent dollar growth during the reported period with sub-segments like eye shadow and mascara growing 11 percent in dollar sales, while eyebrow products grew 10 percent.
"The trend in makeup today is all about accentuating. The return in popularity of eye products comes with a shift from strong or playful colors, and all-purpose mascaras, to products that subtly punctuate and dramatize features around a flawless and yet natural looking face," Grant commented.
The lip segment continues to do well, due mostly to the growth in lip color, in which pink is once again the dominant color. In the first five months, it posted double-digit dollar, while the once very popular lip gloss segment increased only 1 percent in dollar sales.

New York City: 'Feeling Hot Hot Hot'

NY Weather Examiner

When heading outdoors today, and the next couple of days, it will be impossible to avoid 'feeling hot, hot, hot'. There is, and will continue to be, a dome of high pressure covering the eastern half of the United States.
For those who are interested in the history of music:
"In 1982 Alphonsus Celestine Edmund Cassell, aka arrow, recorded the album Hot Hot Hot, the title track, "Hot Hot Hot", becoming his first pan-caribbean hit and the biggest selling soca hit of all time. It was adopted as the theme song of the 1986 FIFA world cup in Mexico.
"Hot Hot Hot" became an instant dance floor hit and was later covered by artists around the world, most notably in 1987 by American singer David Johansen under the name Buster Poindexter.
Buster Poindexter's version of "Hot Hot Hot" was released as the first single from his album Buster Poindexter. It garnered extensive airplay through radio, MTV, and other television appearances"
Back to the weather:
The NWS (national weather service) has issued an excessive heat warning for the entire tri-state area right on through tomorrow night. This may end up being extended into Saturday night.
Today with the heat building in from the southwest under mainly clear skies, a light southwesterly wind, and a high sun angle the temperatures have soared into the upper 90's. When factoring in the humidity, the heat index  was just shy of 110 degrees. If you were stuck outside between 11-5 pm, you can attest to it feeling like you just opened your oven door.
Heading into tomorrow the same conditions will exist with only a couple of minor changes in a higher low (oxymoron) morning temperature, and a wind direction shifting from the southwest to a more westerly direction during the afternoon. The westerly wind will allow air to subside down the Appalachian mountain chain, a warming effect, and head toward NYC. The combination of a higher starting morning temperature and a westerly wind will result in an actual air temperature ranging from 100-105.  Couple that with humidity and it will feel like 110-115+ degrees.
On your Saturday more of the same can be expected. With a variable wind, and a little more cloud cover, the temperature should top out in the mid to upper 90's with a heat index of 100-105.
To put into perspective how "hot" these numbers are, we only need to turn to the records. On July 22nd back in 1957 we hit a high temperature of 101 degrees, and on July 23rd in 1991 we hit a high temperature of 99 degrees. If you were wondering about how today's high temperature stacks up, the current record is 104 degrees set back in 1977. This record was not breached today, but it looks like "104" may manifest itself tomorrow.
This heat means business, so it's recommended to stay indoors where its air conditioned, or head to area beaches and wear sun block. If you’re going to be out and about be sure to avoid strenuous activity between 11-5 pm and drink plenty of fluids.
As a final caution, there is a chance of a short lived spot thunderstorm both Saturday afternoon and Sunday but most areas will not see anything so do not cancel your plans. If the skies should darken in your area, then head in doors and wait for the weather to pass.
